Weaving

Weaving  is the fourth production of TAI Body Theatre. The aesthetics and performance forms of TAI Body Theatre have been deeply connected to traditional dances, songs, and laboring bodies. Weaving is the first work dealing with female’s  laboring body. Collaborating with female Truku artist Laby Eyong, the prize winner of 2016 Pulima Arts Award, TAI Body Theatre explores the histories and memories of Truku women’s traditional craft─weaving.
To Truku people, weaving is an imagination, and also comprehension to the world. In the past, Truku women sat on ground to weave. The woven cloth would come back through loom to women’s bellies when weaving was finished. The cloth ends in where it started, like the cycle of eternal life. The universe, histories, and memories of Truku culture are all inclusively enclosed in the loom, in repetitive laboring. No matter how far one goes, one returns to where he or she sets off.
Repetition does not create restrictions but leave room for broader view and reflections. Through weaving, the repetitive laboring, we introspect ourselves, get closer to authenticity, and that is the wisdom given from the culture.
